Design Brief
inspired by the work of April Greiman, I designed three book cover jacket proposals. Exploring and understanding hierarchy and the modular grid, these proposals were designed to reflect April Greiman's approach and point of view. The dimensions of the proposal is 26.5" x 10" made to fit for her "Hybrid Imagery" book. Each proposal incorporates a different theme. One with type and color, an image of April Greiman with type, as well as type with a metaphor representing her methodology.

Type + color: With the overall theme of this piece to be playful, I aligned the type on a diagonal as a non-conformist to the modular grid. For this design, I wanted to emphasize April's name in the composition without being obvious. By using magenta and hierarchy, I wanted the viewer to decipher the message throughout the composition. To add texture to the background, I played around with duplicating type and their outlines to create contrast against the elements on top of it.
Type + Portrait: With the composition emphasizing more on the images than the type, I took an experimental approach towards this design. For my color scheme, I used blue, red, and orange as this was prevalent in her work. By overlaying each image of April Greiman on top of itself, I was able to achieve an after image look. I placed the portraits of her on the flaps to add dimension in comparison to the blue background. By taking a playful take on the text, I inverted a couple letters that can be seen in her work, and used the typeface snell roundhand in contrast to the sans serif.
Type + Metaphor: The approach for this proposal was taking on a spatial design in both the metaphors and type. The metaphors include a spaceship and a light flare that represent April Greiman's work in a way that she makes use of space in her design and creating energy within it. With this in mind, I separated "design" and warped some of the type. I also played with type on a curve to keep the energy constrained in the composition and to bounce off of each other. By manipulating the color of the images and playing with the effects, I was able to create the composition made by layering the images onto each other whilst keeping the flow of energy all throughout the composition.
